Coordinate Metrology Society Board of Directors

The CMS Board is made up of seven members elected by the Nomination Committee as stated in the by-laws. The stated mission of the Board is to develop CMS organization policies and direction, and to provide oversight and management of the Society.

Joe Sabol

CMS Board Chair

Director of ship fitting, welding, and metrology at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), Joe Sabol has 39 years of experience in optical and 3D industrial measurement in the land surveying, shipbuilding, and commercial nuclear environment. He has been instrumental in developing and initiating the metrology apprenticeship program as NNS. Joe is a graduate of the NNS Apprentice School as a journeyman ship fitter and holds a bachelor's degree from Christopher Newport University and an MBA from Averett University.

Ron Hicks

CMS Board Vice Chair

Ron Hicks is the vice president and general manager, North American Sales and Services, for Automated Precision Inc., where he has profit and loss responsibility for all North American operations. Ron has approximately 45 personnel on his team, with 14 direct reports. As a long-term member of the Coordinate Metrology Society, he has been instrumental in the coordination of the annual CMSC event. Ron is a graduate of the NNS Apprentice School as a journeyman shipwright and holds a bachelor's degree from Christopher Newport University.

Alan Metzel

CMS Board Member

Al Metzel is the senior principle quality engineer at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, responsible for metrology equipment, methods, and training supporting model design and fabrication and nondestructive examination. He is active with the ANSI/America Makes Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative on Additive Manufacturing, in work to develop “The Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing." Al received a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Bonnie Dunbar

CMS Board Member

Dr. Bonnie Dunbar is a former astronaut and currently serves as a Texas A&M John and Bea Slattery Chair Research Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering. Previously, she spent 27 years at NASA, during which she flew five space shuttle flights and logged more than 50 days in space. Dr. Dunbar is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. She earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the University of Washington and a Ph.D. from the University of Houston

Scott Sandwith

CMS BOARD MEMBER

SA Custom Solutions Manager 

Scott has delivered a wide range of automated Metrology Solutions across various applications, including Robotics, Aerospace, Shipbuilding, Power Generation, and Advanced Scientific Systems. Scott, a Mechanical Engineer from Washington State University (1985), started in Metrology some 34 years ago as a part of Boeing’s MR&D Optics Group. That work included developing processes and introducing Photogrammetry, Computer Aider Theodolites, and Laser Trackers to building and inspecting parts and tools on the factory floor. He joined New River Kinematics in 2000 (now Hexagon Metrology Software) and continues to develop innovative solutions that integrate automated Metrology to improve processes.
