This presentation will give an overview of the process and practical aspects involved in using terrestrial laser scans to help create a model of a dockside crane for a Modeling and Simulation tool.
Many of the cranes that service the shipyard’s dry docks lack detailed drawings. A new class of aircraft carrier was due to be docked by one of these cranes. This ship had a structural configuration that could potentially interfere with the crane during loading operations. The simulation tool was created to prove that this interference would be a factor in the complex overhaul of the craft.
The presentation will cover various aspects involved in the survey of the Dry Dock, Crane, and Air Craft Carrier such as networking, special considerations when scanning onboard an aircraft carrier, and integrating Laser Scan data with Total Station data. It will also cover the various considerations for leveraging the cloud data to inform the final simulated model.
