Abstract
Manufacturing high volumes of electric vehicle batteries has become a strategic priority for the United States, with new Department of Energy programs created to increase domestic capacity. This presentation will describe typical processes for manufacturing Li-Ion based battery cells and modules. The key engineering challenges in raw material development and processing will be illustrated. The yield-inhibiting production challenges of preventing particle contamination on electrodes, eliminating defects inside the battery cell, and component alignment inside the module will be described. How battery manufacturers can overcome these challenges and improve quality by deploying Industry 4.0 networked coordinate measuring machines, will be shown.
