Professional Certification for Metrologists

Why Metrology Certification is Important for Practitioners and Employers

3D Metrology is being integrated into manufacturing processes at a rapid rate. Data collection technologies that were once the domain of scientists, engineers, and mathematicians are now being used by technicians and shop-floor personnel for industrial applications and beyond. Measurement equipment is calibrated and certified to performance standards, but most of the personnel operating this equipment are not certified. Many operator-induced variables can dramatically influence the quality of the data collected and the effectiveness of dimensional controls.

Validate your Knowledge with CMS Level-One and Level-Two Certifications

Career-enhancing credentials earned through the Coordinate Metrology Society’s (CMS) Certification program can set you apart in the metrology industry. Level-One and Level-Two Certification assessments for measurement professionals are designed to recognize key skills and knowledge essential to the workplace today. Level-One examinations are proctored, online assessments covering foundational theory and practice common to most metrology devices. Level-Two Certification exams are practical hands-on performance assessments for portable coordinate measuring machines such as laser trackers and articulating arms.

Certification Examinations for the Traditional CMM Operators and 3D Scanner User Communities

The Coordinate Metrology Society has launched CMM Level 1 Certification Examinations. The CMS Certification Committee will continue to develop examinations for the industry's first 3D Scanner User Communities.

The Coordinate Metrology Society responded to the rising demand for a professional Certification program driven by a retiring workforce, new skill requirements from industry, and the ever-increasing need for metrology expertise. Today, CMS Certification credentials aid in quantifying a potential employee or service provider's knowledge of metrology, which is essential to ISO certified manufacturers and companies with Quality Management Systems.

Mission and Vision

The mission of the Certification Committee is to satisfy the identified industry need for professional certifications in 3D metrology. To that end, the committee shall identify existing certification programs that may fulfil this need and, where such programs do not exist, develop appropriate certifications.

The vision of the Certification committee is to be an integral part of the CMS Education Strategy, supporting the educational goals for the future of metrology outreach, STEM, and skills for industry and science.

The CMS Certification Committee

The CMS Certification Committee is the driving force behind the robust Certification program offered by the membership organization. The committee's major role is the assess requirements for achieving certification, investigate existing certifications, define requirements and determine the CMS role as an issuing authority or as a support organization to a certifying body.
