Abstract
This article outlines some system concepts, and related instrumentation design features, for optically jointed probing systems. This is a general description for large-volume coordinate metrology systems which include optical links, but which also reduce line-of-sight restrictions through the use of six-degree-of-freedom (6DOF) target connectors. Recent commercial developments of walk-around probing systems provide this facility to some extent. The objective of this article is to consider how these systems could be extended to cover larger volumes and to reach deeper into objects to be measured.
